Teaching GED Classes: The Challenges and How AI Can Help Transform the Experience

Teaching GED classes is one of the most challenging and rewarding jobs in the educational field. I know it is cause I've done it. In New York City in the 90s, holy cow what a difficult job and again in St. Louis in the 90s. This was all part of my education of becoming a teacher and eventually becoming a college instructor. But during the pandemic, I was a volunteer for a GED class online through Goodwill. Again, holy smokes this is tough. Every student is different, has a different context, family, accent and are at all different levels and are all going to speed or slowly go towards their GED and whatever pace they want. It makes it tough. All those GED teachers out there have my extreme respect and some sympathy. Right now, across the United States, dedicated instructors work tirelessly to help adult learners achieve a crucial milestone: earning their General Educational Development (GED) certificate. For many students, this certificate is more than just a piece of paper—it represents a second chance at education, better job prospects, and the opportunity for further training or college. But for teachers and students alike, the path to success is fraught with challenges.

The Unique Challenges of GED Education Unlike traditional classrooms, GED classes cater to adult learners who often juggle numerous responsibilities. Many students balance demanding jobs, care for children or aging parents, and manage household responsibilities. Their schedules are unpredictable, and finding time for education often feels like an impossible task. Add to this the emotional weight of returning to school after years—or even decades—away, and it’s clear why GED instructors face an uphill battle in keeping students motivated and engaged.

For teachers, the challenges are equally daunting. They are often underpaid and overworked, teaching students with widely varying levels of ability, knowledge, and confidence. One student might struggle with basic reading comprehension, while another is brushing up on algebra after a long hiatus. Teachers are expected to individualize instruction for each student, but with limited time and resources, that’s easier said than done. Burnout is common, as these dedicated professionals pour their energy into helping students succeed against tough odds.

How AI Can Support GED Teachers and Students Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to be a game-changer in GED education, addressing many of the challenges teachers and students face. By integrating AI tools into GED classrooms, instructors can create more personalized, engaging, and efficient learning experiences.

Personalized Learning: AI tools can assess each student’s current knowledge and tailor lessons to meet their specific needs. For example, a student struggling with fractions can receive targeted exercises, while another ready for advanced algebra can move ahead at their own pace.

Flexible Scheduling: AI-powered apps and platforms can provide on-demand learning resources, allowing students to study whenever and wherever it fits into their busy lives.

Interactive lessons, videos, and quizzes can be accessed during lunch breaks, after putting the kids to bed, or between shifts at work.

Engagement and Motivation: Gamified learning experiences, real-time feedback, and adaptive challenges can keep students engaged and motivated, even when the material gets tough.

Teacher Support: AI can handle time- consuming tasks like grading and lesson planning, freeing up teachers to focus on providing emotional support and one-on-one guidance to their students.
